Does CBD (Cannabidiol) Get You High?

Does CBD Get You High?

CBD is an all-natural substance that is derived from the hemp plant. You may be looking to try CBD due to its many wellness benefits. If so, there’s probably one major question on your mind: does CBD get you high? It’s an important question for those looking to get the benefits of CBD but do not want any psychoactive side effects.

With the increasing amount of research being done on CBD, we are better able to understand how it reacts with the body. We are also able to isolate the CBD to achieve maximum results with minimum side effects.

The misconception that CBD gets you high is largely due to CBD’s relation to THC. CBD oil does not contain the psychoactive properties of THC and does not get you high. In order to understand why we must look at the chemical makeup of CBD.

Chemical Properties of CBD

CBD is a phytocannabinoid, which is a chemical compound that is derived from the cannabis plant. The Phyto- means plant and -cannabinoid refers to the class of chemicals called cannabinoids. CBD is one of the dozens of cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. These are what make up the chemical composition of the plant.

CBD interacts with the cannabinoid receptors in our cells. Our brain receptors are sensitive to chemical messengers within the brain as well as those produced outside the body, such as CBD. These cannabinoid receptors make up our endocannabinoid system (ECS) and are spread throughout the brain and body. The ECS is responsible for keeping our body in homeostasis.

The two subtypes of cannabinoid receptors are CB1 and CB2. CBD does not interact directly with these receptors; instead, it acts inhibits the enzyme that activates the receptors. This partially explains why CBD is not intoxicating. In addition, CBD inhibits the interaction of THC with the receptors, which reduces the psychoactive effects of THC.

Not only does CBD not get you high, but it is known to work against the THC that creates a high.

CBD Extraction Process

CBD is extracted from the hemp plant. This Hemp CBD is legal to import to the United Kingdom. In order to be considered legal in the UK, CBD isolate must contain less than 0.2 percent THC. This is a trace amount of THC and is not enough to create a high. And, as mentioned previously, CBD negates even the trace amounts of THC by inhibiting the THC from interacting with our cannabinoid receptors.

 Benefits of CBD

CBD is considered a practical supplement because you can gain the benefits of CBD without worrying about getting high. This allows for CBD to be used daily and at any time.
